Who can check what you are doing on the internet? Your internet service provider (ISP) can see exactly what you are doing. And increasingly ISP records are being subpoenaed in courts and scrutinised by government agencies. And they're just the ones who are legally authorised to watch you. There's also unauthorised people and organisations, including criminals, monitoring the intenet use of ordinary people.
In some countries, governments try to censor what can be accessed on the internet. In some places, visiting certain sites or accessing content is prosecuted and punished. For example, in China, it is dangerous to try to read information on the internet about Tibetan Buddhism. Even in modern democracies such as Australia, governments are trying to restrict access to government-approved websites. And then there are criminal blackmailers who may demand lots of money with threats of exposure of individuals' internet use.
Does that make you mad? It should!
Do you use file sharing services on the internet. Then you may be particularly vulnerable to prying eyes.
Use a virtual private network (VPN) which is like creating a communications tunnel from your computer through the internet to a location in another country far away. VPN prevents anyone what from seeing what you are doing on your internet connection. If properly configured, it is untraceable. Therefore it is safe from prying eyes. For more information, see Wikipedia's article on virtual private network.
